Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666 C.E.) in the memory of his third wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. It is an “elegy in marble” or some say an expression of a ‘dream’.  Taj Mahal (meaning Crown Palace) is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal at the lower chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queen real name was Arjumand Banu.

Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some Western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been surpassed. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rules of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river.

In 1632 Shah Jahan commissioned Persian architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri to create the stunning marble mausoleum in a combination of Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural style in 1632. The project took 22 years, finishing in 1653 using marble from Rajasthan, Punjab, China mainland, China Tibet, Afghanistan, Sir Lanka and Arabia. Construction is estimated to have cost the equivalent of about US$1B including 28 types of precious and semi-precious jewels set in marble.

The four minarets or towers surrounding the Taj Mahal are perfectly identical, using the principles of self-replicating geometry, creating an astonishing mirror effect, Shah Jahan was put under house arrest by his son just following the Taj Mahal’s completion and was only able to view his wife’s memorial from his window the last years of his life .

The mausoleum is surrounded by four 40m minarets.

At the western and eastern ends of the complex are two buildings that mirror each other – a mosque and the so-called jawab, which was constructed for architecture balance.

In front of the Taj Mahal there are two canals that cross in the center with a square-shaped fountain. The end of the canal leads to the tomb. The surrounding garden features two types of tree- fruit trees, which symbolize life, and Cypress trees, which symbolize death.

The Taj Mahal complex is bordered by red sandstone walls. The main gateway was also built using red brick. A huge imposing arch leads into the tomb.
